Tunicates are in the phylum Chordata—which might lead you to expect this sea squirt to be a vertebrate, although it's obviously not. Members of the class Ascidiacea are common in the reef, but rarely recognized for what they are: the invertebrates most closely related to vertebrates. This specimen, of the genus Rhopalaea(?), is perhaps a bit over an inch long.
