lionfish

Fish usually orient themselves with the nearest fixed surface as "down". Lionfish are typically found underneath ledges or coralheads during the daytime (they hunt at night), and so are often upside-down. Most of these pictures have been flipped to make them appear rightside-up.

There are several species of lionfish. I've not tried to identify them here, but note the differences in the spines and the stripes.
